At the time of completion Avalon Willoughby Square was the tallest building in the rapidly expanding neighborhood of Downtown Brooklyn. The building comprises two products unique to the Avalon brand. It is designed to reflect both the refined, sophisticated ‘AvalonBay’ brand as well as the new, edgy ‘AVA’ style. The tower, spanning an entire block, has three unique exterior expressions in order to reduce the visual impact and create a more slender expression against an ever-changing skyline. Perhaps the most visually interesting part of the project is the dynamic, pixelated façade that wraps a majority of the building. This element reintroduces a smaller, human-scaled experience that is more typical of the older neighborhood buildings, providing a visually distinctive identity in a market competing for attention. The building totals 57 stories and over 850,000 square feet. The 823 apartments are divided between the AvalonBay and AVA brands, each with its own unique lobby.
