The Chrystie

SLCE Architects was executive and residential architect for The Chrystie (formely Chrystie Place) and Avalon Bowery Place I and II on a multi-city-block site, designed in phases over five years and fully completed in 2014. The entire development parcel was awarded to AvalonBay Communities by NYC Housing Preservation and Development as a major revitalization to this portion of the Lower East Side.

Avalon Bowery Place considerably augmented this neighborhood’s density, strategically located at the intersection of Houston and Bowery, just south of Manhattan’s East Village. The three buildings were designed and constructed in three phases. Phase I is a 14-story, 395,000-square-foot mixed-use building with 361 residential units, ground- and second-floor retail, and a YMCA. The residential building has a landscaped deck, fitness center, and residents’ lounge. Phase II (Bowery Place I) is a nine-story, 238,000-square-foot mixed-use building with 206 units, ground-floor retail, a garage, residential landscaped deck, a fitness center, and lounge. Phase III (Bowery Place II) is a seven-story, 115,000-square-foot mixed-use building with 96 units, ground floor retail, a garage, residential landscaped deck, and residential lounge. The entire assemblage allowed for more robust retail and ultimately included a Whole Foods and other much-needed neighborhood and community services.
